I’m always drawing out ideas, collecting images, and trying new colour combinations for future work. Sometimes I fall upon the ‘missing link’ to a work that is in progress, while working on another piece. If you have noticed already, I have said ‘work’ three times. There is another way to create…and that is through PLAYING! It isn’t careless art making, but carefree. Let me explain… I actually put materials, images and found objects aside for days where I just have to play and create freely. When I tell myself it is a play day, I immediately go to my list of areas I want to explore without expectations. I give myself a pep talk that I am not allowed to over think and that my decision making must be quick. Run with it! This piece came from a photo of a typical European setting - complete with bridge, canal and historical buildings. But by simply turning the image on its side, a new perspective began to emerge. The symmetry and details of the original composition gave way as I let my squeegee and palette knife curate a new image within the image. After having a few weeks to study this piece, there is still an element of architecture present, but now it is in a raw, beginning state. Could it be a glimpse into the past of a city during the Industrial Revolution?
