This piece was inspired by some concrete cracks in my art studio. I was propping up a frame against the wall and there appeared some unique shapes and lines that really intrigued me. I took a photo of it (which I’ve included for interest sake) and left the frame there, so I could keep creatively thinking of what I wanted to make from it. Then one day, I came across a canvas that fit the frame perfectly, all the physical parts were ready and I felt this sense of freedom to work in this piece now. Sensing the “NOW” is key. My mind was flooded with hues of red, so I went with it. As I started to place colours with the composition, I could see two figures emerge…I stared at them for a while and wondered if another would join them. I didn’t want to leave anyone out! These relaxing figures are overcome by the broad strokes of colour but defined by thin lines. These opposing elements can work peacefully and with purpose. The figures have a togetherness without having to physically touch each other, but their posture reads the same. Where can we find such orchestration in life? It is a Life in the Spirit. This is where we have an infinite capacity for letting go to the Lord….let’s never forget that. And so the apostle wrote so much to these churches about this oneness of mind, this oneness of heart, this oneness of spirit, this 'all speaking the one thing'. Well, he said it again, he asked for it again, he was pleading for it; therefore it is possible. The solution to all those problems and difficulties is Life in the Spirit. Life in the Spirit! And that, of course, as we said this morning, is based upon the Cross, where we have an infinite capacity for letting go to the Lord. If we forget all the rest, remember that.
Figurative painting in deep reds, burnt orange, and brown tones depicting an abstracted seated figure with a warm, contemplative mood and bold colour contrasts, by Joanna Aplin, Canadian artist.
