Back in 2017, I painted “Waiting”. In one of the window panes in this work, I could see this obscure woman and I knew I wanted to do a painting of her. After several failed attempts to represent her, I began to imagine who she was and slowly collect her story. After four years, in the month of May, it all came together. The size of canvas, the colour scheme, the composition - I could see it. Finally! Here she is, turning her back to the Tree of Life. Her gazes downward and her mind tells her hands what to feel again. She represents despair but her surroundings speak of redemption and love(red) and new life (green). Isn’t it ironic that this piece comes from a work called, “Waiting”? Didn’t plan that.
Figurative painting of a dark standing woman beside a lone tree against a bold red sky and textured yellow-green ground with rich surface layering, shown in a float frame, by Joanna Aplin, Georgian Bay artist
