I have been very fortunate to work with wonderful clients this past year. A new client reached out to me about doing a piece for him and expressed that this was his first time commissioning a piece of art. It was to be for his new home in BC. This would also be my first time working with a client remotely. We talked a lot about his new home being built and the modern, clean design he was looking to achieve. One of the great aspects when creating a custom piece of art, is that you can size it according to the room and space it will be placed in. As we talked more about style and subject matter for this piece, he mentioned that he was drawn to the figures in my previous works “Pressing On” and “The Bends”. He personally connected with the pressure and emotional strain those figures were expressing. This gave me clear insight and direction as to what he was after. From there, I sketched numerous drawings to present, and he was able to narrow it down to two, and then one. It was so exciting for me to hear him work out his thoughts and listen to how he was connecting with that final sketch. That process also helped me to settle on the colour pallet. I usually give my clients a choice of whether they would like to see the process of the work, or have the “grand reveal” once it has been completed. Most chose the latter, but it is important they make that decision - not me. Once I was finished, I created a video that he would be able to view the piece in its entirety. I then waited for his approval, packaged it up and shipped it out West by truck, plane and then ferry (he lives on an island)! (I thought about it almost every day until I got word that it had arrived safely.) I look forward to seeing this piece in his new home once it is fully built!
